The Art of Wood Intarsia

6/4/2020

Many people have heard of woodturning to make various things like pens, bowls, vases and bottle stoppers. Woodworking is even more popular among hobbiests who create everything from jewelry boxes to coffee tables and fine furniture pieces. One less commonly known form of wood art is called Intarsia.

Intarsia artists use patterns to cut individual pieces out of various species of wood. Wood is available in almost any color: red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, green, brown, black, cream and many shades in between. These pieces are cut in varying thicknesses so when the picture is assembled there will be a 3 dimensional effect.

Animals pictures are very popular but there are also patterns for landscapes, famous paintings such as The Last Supper, and geometric  designs. More advanced artists are able to cut their own patterns for whatever picture they may want to create or personalize.

West Penn Hardwoods sells Thin Dimensional Lumber specifically for this type of project. We are now adding Project Packs in several different species that will include free shipping. These Project Packs are 10 square feet, the size of the pieces will range between 3-10" in width and 18-46" in length. Each pack will be available in thicknesses of 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4". These packs can be found on our website under Thin Dimensional Lumber, Free Shipping Deals or by the species name. At this time we are adding Hard Maple, Purpleheart and Paduak. More species will be added in the future.
