Australia

Wood imported from Australia comes mainly in the form of burls. Burls are like a wart on the side of the tree, mostly Eucalyptus trees. There are theories on how they form, possibly from some sort of disease which has not yet been identified, from environmental stress or physical trauma to the tree. What we do know is that they are very hard and no two are alike. Burls are harvested by slicing them off the side of the tree and tree is allowed to continue growing and may possibly form another burl in the future.

These burls are prized by experienced wood turners who make beautiful bowls and vessels as well as by other craftsmen for inlay work and knife handles.
