Latin: Diospyros crassiflora Origin: Equatorial West Africa

Ebony has always been prized as a species for its jet black color and density. It comes from West Africa and has been placed on the CITES appendix II listing for restricted harvesting and exporting. We still have a good inventory of Ebony that was imported pre-CITES listing. Getting all black Ebony is becoming harder and harder. 

We sell true Gabon Ebony which may still have some lighter streaks in the pieces as you can see from the photos. You will also see a product called Royal Ebony which is striped heavily with lighter steaks and is great for turning projects because of the color variation.

The small size of the tree and the yield it results have driven the price higher. Ebony is typically used for small projects like piano keys, inlays, pool cues, small turned projects and musical instrument parts.
